Polarization independent silicon micro antenna based on a subwavelength metamaterial

Surface-grating antennas for optical phased arrays usually show a strongly polarization-dependent emission angle and efficiency. Exploiting a subwavelength metamaterial on silicon-on-insulator, we demonstrate a compact 6.4 µm × 2.9 µm micro antenna that emits at the same 10° angle for both TE and TM polarizations, with an estimated efficiency of −4 dB and a polarization-dependent efficiency difference below 1 dB over 31 nm.
