Mode exchangers are key building blocks for on-chip mode-division multiplexing. Combining subwavelength grating metamaterials with symmetric Y-junctions, we demonstrate a 6.5 µm × 2.6 µm mode exchanger operating from 1420 nm to 1620 nm with losses as low as 0.5 dB and extinction ratios above 10 dB, improving to losses below 0.4 dB and extinction ratios above 18 dB over a 149 nm bandwidth.
